My quick review:
I was SO EXCITED to receive this book. I am a sucker for science fiction, especially in the YA genre, because there is just NOT enough of it out there! This book will also appeal to those who like romance, dystopian, paranormal, etc.
Honestly, just READ it. The cover is gorgeous. The characters are done so well. The action is wonderful, the plot is tricky, the setting is so otherworldly, and I am eagerly awaiting books 2 and 3 already!
This book is told in split POV's between the main characters, Waverly and Keiran, a couple betrothed to each other, and I love that. It gives you an opportunity to see into the minds of multiple characters, which really enriches a story, when done well (Beth Revis did this SO perfectly in Across the Universe, so I was pleasantly surprised to see another scifi book told in split POV that did the genre justice)!
The story is so fast-paced and intense. That is something I LOVE in a book. It keeps you interested the entire way through. Waverly, the female lead, is an awesome character. She is so strong and brave--the girls in this book rely on her to help them escape the horrible position they are put in. She definitely had some Katniss-type qualities to her. (Just a note that I do NOT give things away in my reviews! The in-depth plot of this book is intense and awesome, and I don't want to ruin any of the surprises you will encounter when reading it for the first time!) Keiran is tough and has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders.
These two have a future together, and that's all I can say. I just know it!!
There are so many twists and turns in GLOW. The characters are not always what they seem, and there are some in this book you just HATE. But of course, like all things YA, your thoughts on them could change at any given point in time.
I'd rate this one a 4/5. But after a second read, it may just jump up the scale. We'll have to see ;)
Be sure to stop by your local bookstore when it releases September 27th, 2011, by St. Martin's Griffin.
NOW GO ENTER THE CONTEST AND READ IT FOR YOURSELF!! Don't forget to add this to your TBR list on Goodreads.
Be sure to check out my other contests going on. All winners for previous contests+GLOW contest will be announced by the end of the week.

Not sure if it's YA, but I recently read Jenna Starborn by Sharon Shinn and liked it mightily. It's a great adaptation of Jane Eyre done in Sci-Fi. I've liked your page and follow your blog.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I haven't read many YA sci-fi books because I just started reading YA last year and have been working my way through the dytopian genre. I don't think The Hunger Games qualifies for this, which is my fav YA ever, so I will go with Across The Universe by Beth Revis because I did really love this one too. I am really anxious to read Glow, it looks amazing!

If I'm aiming straight for YA sci-fi, I'd have to say Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card. I loved how coldly intelligent Bean was, how he saw everything unfolding, recognized the patterns. Having read Ender's Game first, it was just heart-rending to see someone else know what I knew and watch his decision in how to address it.
ReplyDeleteAll-time favorite though, while not technically YA, I started reading when i was eight, and that was Jack McKinney's Robotech series. The action, the romance, the politics, the vast breadths of space...gorgeous.
And I tweeted! http://twitter.com/#!/DotHutchison/status/102115241277657089
This looks like a great book!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I've ever read a straight sci-fi novel...most have been SFF or straight fantasy, I think. *thinks hard*
