For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon. But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
Releases April 24th, 2012 from HarperTeen
The first thing I want to point out about this book is the cover. Holy WOW. It is beautiful, perfect for the story, which is very much like a futuristic Bachelor (Which airs tonight, and I WILL be watching, by the way. Yes. I know. Laugh at me.). In light of a few recent events on Goodreads, I know some people have had a change of thought about THE SELECTION. I won't get into that, but I should say this:
If you like Dystopians, and you want something not-so-dark but still somewhat twisted, THE SELECTION is a good way to go.
- First, I'll say I liked this book a lot. It was super fun! My only problems was that it starts out a little bit slow. I think that I was SO eager to get this book that when I first started reading, my expectations were way high. The plot drags a little in the beginning, and you just want to get to The Selection...but stay with me, here. Because after the first 50 pages or so, (which are necessary to the later plot but not as fast-paced as they could have been), when the actual Selecting starts...I was totally drawn in. That's when I really became a fan of this book!
- I loved the tension between America and Aspen, her boyfriend, when he basically forced her to enter the contest in hopes of her having a better life. I think it is something a good man would really have to consider. That being said, he was so hurtful to her. And it made for some great scenes!
- THE SELECTION has a very dystopian vibe in the sense that the first setting is desperate and tense, whereas the second half of the book, at the royal palace, is actually very prim and proper and so far from what is really happening in the rest of the world.
- One of my favorite parts of this book is the fashion, and the tension that happens when you throw 35 girls into a giant palace and say "GO! Fight for that sexy man!" It's all great. It really is, and I found myself thinking some girls deserved to have their faces smashed in, and others I just really wanted to WIN! I love when a book can make you hate some people and love others.
- Which brings me to America...she is a wonderful character. She's tough, she doesn't take crap from anyone, and she's not easily wooed by the Prince. I think that says a lot about a character who comes from such a desperate place as she does. As the story goes on, America learns that even though she is strong and opinionated, she doesn't know exactly what she wants. Especially when it comes to her heart. I think that speaks so true to what the average teen girl goes through. It's so confusing to know what your heart wants, especially in today's world, and so the author did a great job of making her conflicting feelings feel very close to home.
All in all, this was a super fun read. It's quick and easy, and if you love a little drama, a little romance, and a lot of fashion, then pick up THE SELECTION this April when it hits stores!
Thanks to Harper Teen for proving me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks for sharing your review today. I enjoy having new (to me) books brought to my attention and while I had read the title, I was a little unsure of what it was about :)
ReplyDeletethanks for reading the review! :)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like something I'd love. Adding it to my TBR and what a beautiful cover. I want that dress! Do you think Free People makes one? LOL
ReplyDeleteHA! I wish, I'd totally buy it. So gorgeous and whimsical!
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it! I'll admit though, that the whole goodreads incident has left me kind of reluctant to read it but still... that COVER! It's so gorgeous and pretty and beautiful, I feel myself drawn to it anyway haha! And your review definitely has me curious about it :)

I wish the author and agent hadn't behaved so badly over a less-than-complimentary review on Goodreads... I just can't bring myself to support it now, even though it sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteGreat review. I love it when the characters get under your skin. Definately be looking for this one when it hits the shelves. Love your site, BTW.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
AAAAAAAAAH! Lindsay, you lucky thing! The Selection looks and sounds amazing, and I'm really looking forward to it. I love this review! As always, I love your bulleted points, and oh my goodness, I love the sound of everything about this. Castles? Gorgeous men? Dystopian vibe and DRESSES! It sounds like Miss Universe crossed with the Bachelor crossed with the parading around bits at the beginning of Hunger Games. Want want want.
ReplyDeleteAwesome review!! I am super excited to read this one and I am glad that you enjoyed it :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to hear you enjoyed this!! The cover is SO stunning, so purely on a shallow note, it'd be disappointing if the story didn't live up to it. It sounds fantastic though, even despite a slow start. I like that America is a tough heroine, yet is still at conflict with her heart. Brilliant review, Lindsay! Can't wait for this :D
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed this! Its been on my TBR forever! The cover is GORGEOUS!! It's what first drew me in to this book but the plot is extremely intriguing. Tough heroine + dystopia + prince = awesomeness! great review!
ReplyDeleteHope you all enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI have this one sitting on my desk and it's luring me in, but I'm waiting until next month to read it. It looks very interesting, and I'm so glad to hear that the main character is fairly awesome. :)
ReplyDeleteI've seen very mixed reviews on this one (although I didn't know about the goodreads drama). I think it sounds really interesting and different, so I'm still going to read it at some point. And yes, holy wow, to that cover!!!
ReplyDeleteLove your review. This is one of my most-anticipated 2012 reads. :) I can't wait to pick it up. Already hearing great things about it from the advanced reviews.
ReplyDeleteHope you're having a great week!

I read the summary for this book a while back and was sad, because it reminded me of my own plot line swirling around my head. Though, they are different but at the same time...kinda the same.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I am excited for a read and because of your review it sounds better than I imagine. Can't wait till it comes out and I'm glad you liked. :)
I was keen to pick up this book (despite the smelly armpit cover) but immediately found myself deleting it from my wishlist when I heard the authors feedback on a particular review. Totally outrageous.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like such a great book and I love dystopians! I will be adding this to my TBR pile, great review! It makes me excited :P
ReplyDeleteNatasha
I've been wavering back and forth on this one, with reviews for the book going back and forth and the GoodReads incident, so it's nice to see a good review of the book. :)
ReplyDeleteglad to see you may change your mind :)
ReplyDeleteThis book looks stunning! I haven't heard of it before now. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty cover! And I do like my dystopians somewhat dark and twisted. Looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteI have been waiting for a review of this book!! Great thoughts! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThis is the first review I've read of this book and it makes me wish it were coming out way sooner!
