Review- THE PREDICTEDS

The Predicteds
THE PREDICTEDS- Christine Seifert

Your future is not your own...

"We wanted to know what makes a good kid good and a bad kid bad. Can you blame us for that? We found an astoundingly, marvelously simple answer: The brain isn't so much a complicated machine as it is a crystal ball. If you look into it, you will see everything you want to know."
-Dr. Mark Miliken, senior researcher at Utopia Laboratories
Who will it be?
Will the head cheerleader get pregnant?
Is the student council president a secret drug addict?
The whole school is freaking out about PROFILE, an experimental program that can predict students' future behavior.
The only question Daphne wants answered is whether Jesse will ask her out...but he's a Predicted, and there's something about his future he's not telling her.

My thoughts Overall:

I seriously LOVED this book. It was so different from what is out there right now, in a good way. The voice of the main character, Daphne, is fresh and has some great snark. I loved the little snippets of humor throughout to break the tension. When an author can pull humor off nicely, especially in YA, it is always a plus!

Getting into the Nitty-Gritty:

The plot is so twisted and lovely, just how I like it. Most would assume, looking at this novel, that it is going to be a dystopian. It is definitely not that. It has twists of science fiction and contemporary thrown in, and is just full of awesome.  My favorite part was the intro, with the school shooting, which draws you right in and gives you chills. This book is action packed from the start, but it heavily relies on character development, which is of course nice when reading a YA book. PROFILE, which is the computer program that can predict the outcome of what moves students will make (much like Minority Report) feels real and creepy. It gives the reader a sense that even they are being watched.  Daphne is so cool because she relates and connects to not just ONE type of person, like in many YA books, but reaches out to everyone, even the creepy girl with random clips in her hair. :)

I love the idea that this book kept making me ask myself questions.  I loved the writing style, the simplicity of the dialogue, and the way it keeps you up all night reading. I am definitely going to be looking out for more works by Christine Seifert, because her voice spoke so fluidly in my head while i was reading. As a writer, I love when I can make a great connection with someone else's voice, and this one did exactly that!

  10. Great review! I haven't heard of this one, but I definitely will be checking it out, though!

About your comment on my review, have you tried looking in the middle grade fiction section? I believe it actually is middle grade fiction, not young adult. If you've tried looking both places, and you really want the book, you could always try amazon or book depository. :)

  14. The plot sounds amazing. This book sounds so intriguing- sort of a spin on Gattica (the movie, I don't know if there is a book). I have added this to my must read list- you wrote an excellent review.
