Author Interview! and a Review- SEERS

Today, I'm welcoming author HEATHER FROST to my blog! Heather is the author of SEERS, a new YA paranormal from Cedar Fort Books! Heather was awesome enough to stop by and answer a few questions for me! :) Check out the interview, and also, my review of Seers below! So here we go:

1- Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I'm an author, a big sister, a full-time student, and I read books and watch movies religiously. I'm 21 years old, and despite its many difficulties, I love life. When I'm an old woman, I hope I can be half as funny as Granny, from the black and white Beverly Hillbillies TV show. I like old things: old houses, old movies, and old books.

2- I know you're considered young in the publishing world! How do you think that has played into your journey as a writer?
No matter your age, getting published for the first time is still a new experience. It's scary, and exhilarating all at the same time. But being younger than many authors, I'd have to say that I just feel very fortunate to have achieved my dream so early. I've always wanted to be an author, and so this whole thing just feels like a miracle to me. I've had my share of rejections, but I've also had great support from family and friends. I don't know that this is true for everyone out there, but I think being younger helped me deal better with the rejection I received. It was easier to keep moving forward, and know that there was still plenty of time to reach my goal. I know it's helped give me more time to write. Younger, less responsibilities, that sort of thing.

3-What advice to you have to any writers just starting out?
Don't give up! I know too many people that let the rejections get to them. Don't give up on your dream, because I'm living proof that if you're persistent, you can manage anything.

Heather Frost!
4- Do you remember the time you thought "I want to be a writer", or has it always been something you've wanted to do?
I've always had a love of books, and that kind of just morphed into my dream of becoming an author. Writing is a part of me, and it has been for as long as I can remember. Luckily, my spelling's improved a bit over time.

5- Describe your writing space!
I like to sit at my desk in the corner, next to a towering bookshelf overwhelmed with books both new and old. My laptop is surrounded by clutter: post it notes filled with partial ideas and snippets of dialogue, and there's usually a notebook propped open by my elbow, ready and waiting. A soft cloud of music hovers over everything, with headphones always laying close at hand, in case my surroundings become too loud. I usually have a couple random books I've been thumbing through lately resting on the back corner of the desk, just in case the urge to read suddenly strikes me.

6- Can you give us a little look into Seers?
There's a lot to explore in Seers. The world is new and dangerous, full of guardian angels that are locked in a dangerous struggle with immortal Demons. And then there are the Seers themselves. Kate, the protagonist, is a Seer. She can see mood auras on the people around her, which allows her to discern between the two warring groups. Kate's recently lost her parents in a tragic car accident, and she's struggling to cope with that—and also come to terms with her new psychic abilities—for her own sake, and for those around her. But her resolve to try and be normal is shaken when she begins to be stalked by invisible people with strange auras. Kate is about to learn that Seers are just pawns to both the Guardians and Demons, and that Demons don't care who they hurt.

7- What's next for you with writing? Sequels? Or something new?
I've got a few writing projects, but working on the sequel to Seers is high on the list.

8- You just turned into a goldfish? What the heck do you do now?!
Hopefully there's a ceramic castle nearby—that alone would probably make the transition worth it! But, above all, I'd blow lots of bubbles and just keep swimming.

9-Thanks for stopping by! Anything else you want readers to know?!

Now...Let's find out a little bit about Seers.
It's available NOW, from Bonneville. Go get your copy!
For Kate Bennet, surviving the car wreck that killed her parents means big changes and even bigger problems. As she begins to see auras and invisible people, Kate must learn to trust Patrick O'Donnell, a handsome Guardian, or risk her life being overrun with Demons. She soon realizes that both she and her heart are in big-time trouble.

My thoughts:

First, I love a good book in first person. My favorite thing about this one is that it is told in alternating points of view. As a reader, it's great because you get an insight into each character's life. I really enjoy when I get the opportunity to see this, as I think it helps with world-building when done right! And the author pulled it off nicely.
One of the characters, Kate, is awesome. She is strong-willed, has a great voice, and is just interesting to read about.  I was annoyed with her at times, for the way she handled some things, but that is so much like real life.
I love Kate's "gift," and although auras are not entirely new in YA fiction, the author gave it a great twist. Of course, with that power comes a choice of who to defend, and that adds some great conflict to the book.
Patrick's character is awesome, and although Kate already has a SUPER sweet boyfriend (which sort of made me mad at times lol), there are conflicting feelings. I don't like to give things away in my reviews...but I was super pleased with how this book ended, wink wink, and it was awesome to see that the book is set up for a sequel! (And we all know from the interview that Heather is obviously hard at work on it!) I enjoyed the voice of this book, Heather Frost has done a great job with her debut novel, and I am excited to see her career bloom.  Although there are many typical elements in this YA novel, I really think many people will enjoy it. This is quick read, so if you've got some free time on the weekend, pick up a copy for yourself!

And if you have yet to do so, stop by Goodreads and add it to your TBR list!
