Solstice
Where Mythology and Dystopia meet...Piper’s world is dying. Global warming kills every living thing on Earth, and each day brings hotter temperatures and heat bubbles which threaten to destroy humanity. Amid this Global Heating Crisis, Piper lives with her mother who suffocates her more than the chaotic climate. When her mother is called away to meet the father Piper has been running from her entire life, Piper seizes an opportunity for freedom.
But when Piper discovers a world of mythology she never knew existed, she realizes her world is not the only one in crisis. While Gods battle for control of the Underworld, Piper's life spirals into turmoil, and she struggles to find answers to secrets kept from her since birth. And though she’s drawn to her classmate Shayne, he may be more than he claims. Piper has to choose whom she can trust and how she can save the people she loves even if it means the end of everything she’s ever known.
This book is seriously SO AWESOME. I fell in love with it after only a few pages. If you guys have not read it yet, PLEASE check it out! Especially if you are a fan of dystopians/mythology. PJ Hoover does an awesome job of mixing the two.
SOLSTICE by P. J. HOOVER: AUTHOR INTERVIEW w/ BOOK LINE ANSWERS
Thanks so much for inviting me to visit your blog! For those who don’t know, my debut
young adult novel, SOLSTICE, was just released in May. SOLSTICE is what happens
when MATCHED meets THE LIGHTNING THIEF and is largely set in a future where
global warming is destroying the earth.
I revised SOLSTICE endless times, so coming up with lines from the book to answer
questions is a blast! It tests my memory on how well I really do remember what made it
through to the final version J
1. What is the life of a writer like?
“Do you believe in fate?” I ask.
My mom’s face freezes, and her eyes look away from mine. “What kind of fate?”
I’m not really sure even though I asked the question. “Do you think people can
know the future?” It’s the best I can come up with.
“Your future?”
I shake my head. “No. Anyone’s future. Do you think there are people who know
what will happen?”
My mom hesitates before answering. “No. The future’s uncertain. People are too
complex and can act in too many different ways.”
I let out the breath I’ve held since I asked the question. I don’t want to believe in
fate either. – Solstice, Chapter 8
2. Who is your inspiration?
I feel him but don’t see him anywhere. And then his lips are on mine, and I
know everything I thought about him is wrong. I love him more than life itself. He’s my
perfect soulmate, and I’ll never belong with another. The assembly of gods be damned. –
Solstice, Chapter 43
3. How do you deal with "writerly" stress?
I take a sip, waiting for the familiar relaxation in my veins. My mom has been
proclaiming the life-giving powers of wine for as long as I can remember. She claims it’s
a gift from the earth herself and grows grapes downstairs just to be able to make it. –
Solstice, Chapter 8
4. What inspired solstice?
“Global Heating Crisis.” Mr. Kaiser prints GHC in giant letters on the board in
bright orange dry erase marker, underlining it three times. – Solstice, Chapter 2
5. Which character is most like you?
Chloe’s already waiting for me in the library. Her dark hair’s shorter than it
was on Friday, and she’s got it pulled under an emerald green bandana so just the ends
stick out. She’s worn a bandana every day of the four years I’ve known her. I remember
asking her why on the shuttle home from school the first day I met her. She’d laughed and
said, “Because it looks good on me.” – Solstice, Chapter 3
6. What is your favorite line from Solstice?
“The day Ares takes over the Underworld, I’ll tear his entrails out inch by inch
7. Do you ever feel like you put yourself into your stories?
When I think back, it’s like I’m watching actors on stage. Like it was someone
else and not me. – Solstice, Chapter 11
Thanks so much for reading, and may your summer be a sizzling one!
P. J. Hoover first fell in love with Greek mythology in sixth grade thanks to the book
Mythology by Edith Hamilton. After a fifteen year bout as an electrical engineer
designing computer chips for a living, P. J. decided to take her own stab at mythology
and started writing books for kids and teens. P. J. is also a member of THE TEXAS
SWEETHEARTS & SCOUNDRELS. When not writing, P. J. spends time with her
husband and two kids and enjoys practicing Kung Fu, solving Rubik's cubes, and
watching Star Trek. Her first novel for teens, Solstice, takes place in a Global Warming
future and explores the parallel world of mythology beside our own. Her middle grade
fantasy novels, The Emerald Tablet, The Navel of the World, and The Necropolis,
chronicle the adventures of a boy who discovers he’s part of two feuding worlds hidden
beneath the sea.
SOLSTICE is available as a $2.99 eBook on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords,

VERY clever use of book lines to answer the interview questions. My Mother would agree about the wine also.
