What Comes After Author Interview- STEVE WATKINS

I got the awesome opportunity to ask WHAT COMES AFTER author Steve Watkins to list his Top 10 favorite places to write! Here's what he had to say:
Teen Book Scene Tour page!

Interesting question, Lindsay. Over the years, these have been some of mine:

1. Third floor of Strozier Library at Florida State University in Tallahassee where they keep
the oversize books on the oversize bookshelves and nobody goes, and me and a legal pad
and pen sitting on one of those very wide window ledges.

2. Lamu, an island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Northern Kenya, not far from
Somalia, that I got to first by local bus up the coast from Malindi, then low motor boat
just inches above choppy water, and me sitting in a bar on the sound side, wondering how
I ever got this far away from home.

3. Dog Island, a barrier island off the Florida Panhandle coast, also accessible only by boat,
virtually deserted most of the time.

4. St. George Island, the next island over, in my friends Fita and Rip’s beach house in the
dead of winter, alone for a week with nothing to do but write and fight the wind and
freezing rain on long walks on the deserted beach.

5. Where I’m sitting now, looking out our second story window from my office down
our street on the back end of this neighborhood where few cars come and go, but when
the kids are out of school I can see them down on the pipe stem playing basketball and
skateboarding and riding their bikes there and up and down the sidewalk from our end
of the street to the cul de sac at the other end, with a high blue sky that makes me squint
sometimes at the monitor but it’s worth it.

6. My office at the college where I teach, in this peculiar mansion the school bought and
for some reason stuck me in, also on the second floor, where I have a couple of very big
windows and a panoramic view of a lush green hill with cannon placements from the
Civil War where Robert E. Lee had his fortifications during the Battle of Fredericksburg
and from there slaughtered thousands of Union soldiers, many of whose bodies you’ve
probably seen in Matthew Brady’s famous photographs of the notorious Sunken Road,
which is on the other side of that hill.

7. At Bucky and Heather’s funky house way out in the woods east of Tallahassee, down a
long, winding dirt road, past cows and a horse barn, with their four or five dogs roaming
around, rubbing up against me, following me on walks back to their pond, and Bucky’s
weird wood sculptures all over the place where you expect to find them and also where
you don’t. Also, there’s this bizarre concrete-worshipping cult at the end of the road, half
a mile away. Don’t know what’s up with them but I stay away. And write.

8. The laundry room in our old house, which was the only place we had for an office.
Always productive there. If the writing wasn’t working I could always throw a load in the
washer, transfer it to the drier, fold.

9. Under the covers with a flashlight and a notebook when I was a kid, which I’m pretty
sure my youngest daughter Lili is up to some nights these days, too, working on her
illustrations for her version of Aliens vs. Robots.

10. In my head, wherever I am, whenever I’m working on anything, characters and plot
elements and scenes knocking around, working themselves out, revealing themselves or
trying to. I tend to walk into things, but no head injuries. So far.
