My mother is a Special Education teacher at a High School here in town. I have experienced first-hand some wonderful teens with Autism and Asperger's. These kids are brilliant. Funny. Clever. SO SWEET. They light up whenever they see me or my mother. It's wonderful to see kids that are faced with such difficulties, but have SO MUCH JOY. There is a LOT we can learn from people with Autism or Asperger's.

ReplyDeleteMy niece was born with as to date unnamed syndrome, but autism is a characteristic of it. I had temporary custody of her from 16 to 27 months and those days changed my life. When I got her she couldn't sit up and had never eaten anything. By the time the state of NC gave her back to her drugged up mother she was standing, eating everything on earth, and nearly walking.
ReplyDeleteToday is seven years, walks,runs, still eats like a horse, but is the size of three year old.
She can't speak due to her autism, but she is learning to communicate with hand language. I love my little Tater and miss her everyday.

My little girl Rylee is almost 8 an has P.D.D. I my self as many ppl didn't know 6 an a half years ago there are many branches of autism. We had our ups and downs but she has made me a better person. She has showed me so much. She has grown to be a wonderful little girl and I would not Chang a thing about her. She wants to be a Teacher when She gets older and I am behind her 100%.

There are so many beautiful stories that have already been told here, mine really pales in comparison. But, I'm a 4th year medical student, and I've worked with Autistic kids - and the thing that affected me the most about these children is that although they seem anti-social, and have difficulty communicating their needs, they are still children. Their child-like innocence, and their charming little ways still fill you with inspiration - because these kids don't just face adversity, but rise above it!

I started learning about Autism when I became a mother. As a mother to two sons, and realizing just how the odds are rising, esp. with boys scared me to learn as much as I could, so I could help them as early as I could should they have it. Thankfully, they don't (though the youngest is still pretty young)

I have a mild form of Asperger's. I was only diagnosed in the past few years, but I know I've suffered from it most of my childhood. I'm really shy and afraid to discuss Asperger's and Autism with people, but I do spread the word on the internet. I want more to know Autism isn't just the extreme case. I want people to understand me and that in some ways I can't help who I am. I'm not trying to be rude, mean, or stuck up. I just am the way I am. Knowing that I have this, I can try to overcome the symptoms, but it is hard.

I am an elementary librarian and work with many Autistic children. One of my special memories involves a child with Asperger's who always had a hard time finding something he wanted to check out from the library. It took me almost an entire year, but we finally found some series that he liked. And one day, he came up to me outside library time and said "I have to tell you about this book I read. I think you will like it." Makes me smile just thinking about it.

I don't know anyone with Autism but my cousins son has Angelmans Syndrome. People are frighten of anything they don't understand. Once people understand they don't have to be scared any more. These children are a joy. Thank you for doing this giveaway.

ReplyDeleteIf you've stopped by my blog hop page you will see that Tommy, my cousin, is the reason I am so devoted to autism awareness. Tommy is the biggest reason, but not my only one, I've tutored kids with severe mental and physical handicaps since I was ten. I've taught acting classes, taught them to swim, helped with physical therapy and have been a shoulder to cry on.
I have a deep, deep, deep love and passion for these kiddos and I hope to one day adopt children with less severe mental and physical handicaps so I can show them how brightly they shine! : )

I volunteer at least once a week at a therapeutic horseback riding center and we have many autistic riders, both adults and children. I've learned so much from them and always look forward to spending more time helping out in lessons. I help raise autism awareness by volunteering for fundraisers whenever they're hosted.
